I like to tune into the HSC's Coin Show for a laugh occasionally. That dealer that's on there is so full of it, he's funny. I have never seen him offer anything I couldn't get somewhere else much cheaper, and it's hilarious to hear him talk up things for people who have no clue about collecting.

What say you?

Hi, I agree with you about watching Steven Bromberg of the Home Shopping Channel talk about the coins he has for sale as if they are the rarest on the planet and they are soon to sell out; so you better get your set now by calling in or miss a lifetime deal..................LOL, give me a break!
I suppose most of the viewers that fall for that kind of retoric are newbie's to the hobby or wanna bees to the hobby. Steve has been personally collecting coins for the past 30 years and from what I've heard he has one of the nicest personal Canadian decimal collections in the country. Too bad he wouldn't list those coins instead.

I remember a few years ago he sold some 2000p 50 cent pieces in the Mint Clocks for around 700. Now that was a deal

I think its too bad that they would rather burn people to make a quick buck rather than offer honest deals and earn some repeat customers. All they are doing is making people feel like they got tricked into a hobby that will rip them off because they pay way to much for something and when they find out the book value they never come back to the hobby. I think they could make just as much money, if not more, by selling the same coins at a fair price and maybe offering something other than Eagles and $2 proof sets to appeal to a wider base of collectors.

I'm sorry, I'm thinking of HSN, Home Shopping Network, here in the US. Anyways, they make me mad.

There really isn't much difference between the U.S. HSN and Canada's HSC as far as moving stuff that the average collector wouldn't consider "investing" in.

The other thing that I can't stand are those commercials (usually shown late-night) for spurious stuff from Third World banana republics that is only made in order to fleece collectors. Liberia seems to be the worst offender, with such things as the 9-11 $20 bill, and then there is also the Cook Islands copy of the 1921 Canadian silver dollar, and that other coin with the WTC that stands up. The ad copy makes it sound like this stuff is real.

It all kind of reminds me of that junk that the Franklin mint used to put out.

Those WTC "commemoratives" are far more tasteless than anything Franklin mint churned out. At least they were a legitimate mint, producing some coins for foreign countries.
You know--those coin-grifter guys are a tad obvious as to their motives. If a collector can't figure that out on their own, well...
