Yes, there is flattening on the bottom of the 8.

It may have damaged the plating on that area. The reason I feel it is not a split plating issue during the strike is; "That area is not known to split on that area." So it may have taken a hit on one of it many travels and now is rotting as mentioned already. Not a mint error.
