Hi, I found this strange Morgan design on a Silver Quarter Planchet. weight is 6.25g which is correct, Diameter is 20mm and thickness 3mm. I know diameter and thickness is way off for a quarter. Also the edge is plain. Probably someone cut a Morgan dollar or so, just wanted to get some opinion... Thx in advance! &

The rounded over reverse edge and flat jagged obverse edge sure looks like it could have been punched out of Morgan dollar.

Okay Thx, I honestly couldn't find anything about a Morgan dollar on a quarter planchet on the web, are there any confirmed coins somewhere? I'll try to post more pics from the edge ASAP.

Plain Edge leads me to think someone just cut out the center of a Morgan dollar post mint.

Quote: why is the diameter and thickness different from a regular quarter!? Because this piece has nothing to do with a quarter. Although I haven't seen one of these before, it certainly looks like someone took a Morgan dollar and punched out a core--you can see the shear marks along the cut surface. The diameter is therefore what ever size punch was used and the thickness should be close to that of a normal Morgan dollar.

Thx all for your opinion! I think the same, someone cut out a Morgan dollar for fun. Although it's unclear why the cotton bolls are not cut right, there it looks like the boll top is 'fading'... I'll keep it definitely as a fun piece. (thickness is a little more than an Uncirculated Morgan but that could just be my bad measurement skills). Should I take it to a coin show to get an expert opinion!?

google "how to make a Morgan dollar coin ring" and you will find the source of your dump. (dump is the term for the piece punched out of a coin, it is not a pejorative)

I will check that although this is neither a ring or a real Morgan dollar but maybe it helps :) I appreciate your thoughts

Quote: Should I take it to a coin show to get an expert opinion!? No, people would be annoyed that you are wasting their time. It's just a damaged coin. Worth whatever melt value is on roughly half a Morgan. $7?

From the odd color and grainy surfaces plus the weak details I think this could be punched out of a counterfeit dollar. Oh and the idea of it being a quarter planchet should have been dismissed immediately, It's 20mm in diameter, a quarter planchet is over 24 mm and would have spread even larger under the force of the strike.

This was an "idle time project" by someone with access to a machine shop.

Thx again, I'll just keep it as an odd 'somebody had too much time' item :)
