Hello,

I would like to establish a high-quality U.S. American Silver Eagle Type Set. I realize what I include is up to me, but I would like to hear the community's thoughts of what should be included in such a collection.

Thank you in advance!

What is a U.S. American Silver Eagle Type Set? You mean an album?

I am interested in hearing what specific coins within the US American Silver Eagle series I should include in a type set. For example, I might want to include one coin each with a specific finish (uncirculated, burnished, proof, reverse proof, etc.). Or I might want to include one of each mint mark (P, S, W, etc.).

Thank you in advance.

IIRC, there are only two "types": pre-2008 reverse and the present reverse. There's another design supposedly coming next year.

Your subject line is confusing. You should have said: Which American Silver Eagle Should I Include In My Type Set?

There is only one slot for an ASE. How do you do one of each?

I do not use an album for my type coin collection. I use BCS mutlipocket pages to store my coins. These pages give me great latitude to decide what I can place in my collections.

IMO, you could assemble a comprehensively representative set of ASEs with a minimum of seven (7) coins by assembling examples of each of the following:

1. Bullion: Availability - 1986 to present
2. Burnished/Uncirculated: Availability - 2006 - 2008, 2011 to present
3. Enhanced Uncirculated: Availability - 2013 (West Point Set)
4. Proof: Availability - 1986 - 2008, 2010 to present
5. Reverse Proof: Availability - 2006 (20th Anniversary Set), 2011 (25th Anniversary Set), 2012 (San Francisco Set), 2013 (West Point Set)
6. Enhanced Reverse Proof: Availability - 2019, (available individually [S] and in Pride of Two Nations Set [W])
7. Incuse Edge Lettering: Availability - 2016, 30th Anniversary

You can extend this set by getting examples of each finish version from each mint that struck it, but this will add notable cost to the overall set (e.g., adding a proof 1995-W). You can also extend it by getting pre- and post-2008 examples of coins (if available) to have examples of the two different reverse types.

Thank you for the list.

Hidalgo, this is my ASE goal as well. I do not want a full set, just representation of these versions.

I have 1, 4, 6, 7. Therefore I will need 2, 3, and 5 to be "complete."

Keep in mind that #8 is coming soon - the WWII privy-marked ASE!

Thank you commems for your list! I see another (shorter) possibility for a US Mint type set of American Silver Eagles (ASEs). These involve design changes. The coins I would consider essential:

1. Pre-2008 reverse ASE
2. 2008 - present reverse ASE
3. Incuse Edge Lettering (30th Anniversary Coins)
4. ASE with the V75 privy

and next year, we can add a 5th design change:

5. New reverse design.

I can expand the type set by finish, mint mark, etc.

That's certainly a way to go - we all have to collect what makes us happy! I wish you the best with your pursuit! Keep us updated!

For me, the various finishes used for the ASE series are what makes for an interesting set. The subtle change on the reverse for 2008 and beyond vs. 2007 and earlier does not grab my eye like holding a proof and reverse proof side-by-side or comparing an uncirculated coin vs. an enhanced uncirculated piece. The collection I outlined attempted to maximize visual impact - it works for my collecting aesthetics!

Thanks commems.

Yes, I like seeing the different finishes as well.

I have a Lincoln Type set that focuses on the following:

* Presence of VDB initials (1909, 1918 and beyond)
* Metal content (e.g., bronze, steel, cartridge case, copper alloy, zinc)
* Reverse design (wheat stalks, Memorial, Shield, 2009 Bicentennial designs)
* Small Date & Large Date (1960, 1970, 1974, 1982)
* Mint Marks (P, D, S, W)
* Wide AM vs Narrow AM (1998, 1999, 2000)
* Bicentennial (4 designs) - Copper and Zinc with P, D, S mintmarks
* Finishes (business strike, satin, proof-like (SMS), proof, enhanced uncirculated, reverse proof)
* Assorted error coins
