Hi everyone,

There are several foreign coins in the collection I inherited. I am attaching a photo of one which I believe is an 1865 Burmese 1/4 peso. Could someone please help me out?

Thanks.

Bill

Yes looks like a match of design to me. Here is the numista link:

Is there also a match on the weight and diameter?

Thanks. It is 6.17 grams and about 24 mm. Its grade appears to me to be in the high VF/low XF range. Best, Bill

All,

All,

Sorry, I'm just getting back to this one. It raised a question for me about grading "details." Does the general grade (e.g., XF-Details) mean that the coin would be an XF without the factors that makes it "details" or is it a higher grade that has been lowered to XF by the factors? As you can see, there is a small dent at the top rim of the reverse. Could I get some grading estimates please?

Thanks!

Bill

Personally I would grade this one approximately VF. I don't think it's XF because of the wear on the details of both the peacock feathers and the leaves on the other side, and the rim ding. Still a nice, interesting coin to have in a collection.

Thanks. I thought it was an XF, but I can see VF with the rim ding. Still, I think it's the second best one I've seen.

Best,

It's my understanding that "EF details" would translate to, "If this coin didn't have the defect that caused the giving of a 'details' grade, then the coin would have graded in the EF range".

Personally, I'd grade the coin as "Fine". Too much wear to qualify as VF.
