I mentioned in my first post that I recently purchased some coins and I am learning about them and the grading process. I watched 4 Youtube Videos on how to grade coins. I came across this site on my search and I was wondering if you wouldnt mind helping me with advice.

I see this 1893 is a rare year for the Morgan dollar from the Philadelphia Mint.

Could you let me know what kind of condition you think this is in? Seems in good shape to me.

Thank you so much.

Thank you so much. I am on the East Coast and still awake at 5 AM. This is all so interesting to me. I am making a list of coins I need to find now.
Rest in Peace

Unfortunately I think this is a counterfeit. The patina is that of Chinese made examples and beyond that several details stand out as wrong. Most noticeably the 9 in the date and the incomplete E P on the obverse motto. What is the weight and how does the rim thickness compare to other Morgan dollars?

Not good news but welcome to CCF

edit to add - here is a link to a site with the known die pairings for '93-P.http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.c.../1893-P_VAMs

IF it's genuine I'd call it VF cleaned.
Being "cleaned" would account for its appearance.

I'm also leaning towards fake. Date looks off, especially the 9. Dentils aren't quite right either.

It is not a genuine coin, unfortunately.

Well this sure is a bummer for my first coins to be fake. Should have known it was too good to be true.
I really appreciate everyone's help.

Crazy to think people are faking coins. I never knew anyone would do that. I'm bummed.

Don't let it discourage you from the hobby. If you bought it online, you may be able to get a refund.

Pretty much every US coin series ever (and many foreign coins as well as ancients) are being faked en masse by the Chinese counterfeiters, and on certain sites which shall remain nameless, you can buy fairly good copies of any US coin you like, in bulk quantities.

When first starting out, it's important to learn about detecting the fakes, and what to look for to help distinguish them. In the meantime, stick to coins "slabbed" (graded and in a holder) from ANACS, PCGS, ICG or NGC, as they are far less likely to not be genuine. Once you have learned what to look for, you can start dipping your toes in the waters of buying "raw" coins.
If there are reputable coin shops in your area, those are good places to buy coins as well as to seek education and opinions.

When you buy a house, you want a certified home inspector to check it out; when you buy a used car, having a certified mechanic check it out is a good idea; before you spend hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on a coin, having an expert or professional opinion is likewise a good idea. In the meantime, Google is your friend -- there are lots of good articles out there on how to spot fake coins, especially for heavily-faked series like the Morgan dollars and Trade dollars.

Remember -- if a deal is way too good to be true -- such as the chance to buy a key date coin in high condition for a small percentage of its book value -- it isn't always a scam, but it is more often than not, and you should be extremely cautious unless you are very certain as to what you're looking at.
