Hi folks I wonder if I could pick your brains. I was looking at this 1976 Lincoln Memorial cent and noticed doubling on the legends and the building. I first just took it as Machine Doubling. What I can't work out is why it is intermittent.? It seems to be on 3 or 4 letters them it misses 1 or 2 then America most of it is untouched and only the last 2 columns and the left of the building edge is affected. So my long way around of asking shouldn't the whole of the reverse be affected if it is solely MD? T.I.A

Most certainly MD. Notice how the devices and the doubling aren't completely parallel but have a wavy continuity. This is because the "doubling" was taken from the device and spread out to give it a doubling effect.

@zook, as you know, there are tons of helpful threads here. One of my faves for describing MD is this one by @coop:

Ty. Yes I know its Mech doubling but what I wanted to know is why it isn't on everything as surely the whole coin would shift like you see on normal Machine Doubling. Lots of lettering isn't affected Like the whole of AMERICA. I am trying to get my head around how only part of the legend is MD and some not affected? T.I.A

MD does not always show on all of the devices. Coop can go into detail for you.

Sometimes the bounce flies over the head of edge devices an alters the taller devices, like on your coin the building or other times the bust. All still Machine Doubling, because the machine was the cause.
