This is my first posting to this community and I am new to the hobby. I have been frustrated by visiting coin shops to ask questions, only to be offered melt value for my examples.
My question: Should I have my coins graded? I have attached one of many examples:

Any comments welcome!

Unfortunately 1878 'S' is quite a common date even in that condition, about AU-58, melt is right around what most dealers will pay for that coin as I imagine they would price it around $25-$30 USD and it would probably sit awhile.

I have an example of that same date and mint mark in even better shape, MS-63, and I paid to get it graded by a Canadian grading company 'CCCS', and even now most dealers would probably offer about $30-$40 CAD for it.

Mind you it was a gift from my Father, and I only paid to have it graded as a preservation measure with no intent to sell. The grading fees for me were only $12 as I sent it in with a friend of mines order, whereas if you were to send it to a US grading company it would likely cost you about $18 for the grading, probably another $10 for shipping handling and insurance, plus the membership fee for the grading company you choose.

.... to the Community!

Your 78-S appears to be in high AU condition. I'd put it in the AU55/58 range. It is not worth slabbing unless it has some kind of sentimental value.

to CCF. As a general rule,a coin needs a retail value after slabbing of at least $150 to justify all costs involved.

Agree this is AU, possibly cleaned, and not worth the cost of grading.

Looks to have been cleaned, the obverse is full of hairline scratches and it also has no luster overall judging from these pics
