I scored both sides of the tube with a razor to the point where I could sense I was hitting some of the rims. Let sit on the dash of my truck in direct sun and several times tried to rack/twist the tube to get it to split open along the scrores. Very hot. Had to use gloves. No dice. Couldn't get it to split apart. After 8 hours of sun, I used pliers and tore the top section off the tube.

At this point, I don't think I'm going to find anything spectacular in this tube. Might use an axe to smash this thing apart and release these into the wild...
Rest in Peace

So I have a related question. I store a lot of nickels in tubes. Will the problem that the OP had with his pennies eventually happen with my tubes? Or is the problem more related to the type of tube originally used to store the pennies? The tubes I use were purchased within the last couple of years.
The type is the problem and I think yours should be fine. I have some tubes from the late 1980s that are fine. They are Whitman brand.

It was worth a try, in my opinion. Thank you for sharing the results.

Yeah, wait for my next results... I'm going to use a saw to cut the tubes and then peel each penny off the plastic. I'm expecting lots of post mint damages...

I sold them as is, and let someone else deal with the problem.

I think my solution was the best!

Could be pricey and a bit dangerous, but immersion of a full tube in pure acetone might prove interesting.
