Since I live in Utah, I do encounter them and I am familiar with their history, but much of this material is seriously expensive, so I haven't tried to get any of it. Some of the scrip from the Bishop's General Storehouse or the various Mormon co-ops is reasonably affordable, and it might be worth obtaining an example just for the historical interest. I would love to have the Mormon gold coin with a legend in the Deseret Alphabet, but I don't have thousands of dollars to spend on a single coin; maybe I should get a replica (if one is available). The Deseret Alphabet has a fascinating story which is too involved for me to repeat here, but a search engine should be able to dig up information.

This material is interesting, but since Mormons tend to be strongly aware of their history, there is a lot of demand for it and the most famous pieces are overly expensive.

Be very, very careful when buying one of these coins, as there are any number of 'fakes' being handed around as authentic. Some of the best fake coin producers was a person from Utah who has a lot of he experts fooled for a long time.

Even the experts around here were fooled for a time by the infamous Mark Hoffman, who forged a number of documents and Mormon-related currency. Some of his forgeries could well still be out there.

From what I hear, his forgeries are so good and his story is so famous that his fakes are actually collectable.
