Which yields more coins worth keeping, hand rolls or machine rolls? When searching half dollars, I have had much better luck with hand rolls. However with pennies, I have had better luck with machine rolls.

What is your opinion?

Hand rolls tend to be better since the coins that end up in machine rolls are from a batch that are subject to filtering. By this I mean that a lot of foreign coins and other unusual coins end up being taken out. And in the case of hand rolls, often people try to cheat by putting in odd coins. So this can yield some rather interesting results. For instance I once opened a roll of nickels that was filled with British pound coins.

I think it's a crap shoot.
Machines do filter out "junk" which you might consider interesting. However, a machine can't distinguish a 1950-D Jefferson or a 1909-S VDB from all the other coins.
Hand rolls are done by humans. So you have a chance of getting rolls that are "searched" - either throroughly or just someone pulling out ones that look interesting at first glance. Of course, many are not searched at all.

If I had to choose between a hand-roll or a machine roll, I'd probably take the hand roll, but that's just because something idiotic deep, down inside of me wants to believe..... in the tooth fairy!

I'll choose hand rolls over machine rolls any day.

For the most part, I get better luck with machine rolls- particularly with nickels. I've never gotten anything interesting out of a customer-wrapped nickel roll.

Pennies are more of a mixed bag... on average, I seem to get a lot of exceedingly scummy (corroded) batches, but there is more potential for the occasional "jackpot" (earlier this year I got a batch of $20 in pennies that had been rolled in the early to mid-60s)
