From 1970 to 1972, the Royal Canadian Mint struck the 50 Centavos coin for Brazil, in copper-nickel. At first I thought this was an off-metal strike, perhaps on a Canadian 1c planchet. Then... I looked a little closer... It is finally coming back from PCGS, properly attributed. https://www.PCGS.com/cert/38055407 "Discovery follows discovery, each both raising and answering questions, each ending a long search, and each providing the new instruments for a new search." -- J. Thats actually pretty cool, I would love to find an overstrike in the wild but I feel like my only hope of ever owning one is to purchase one. Thanks for sharing!

Nice one! However did you find it? Did it ever make it to Brazil or did it leave the Mint via the back door?

Quote: Did it ever make it to Brazil or did it leave the Mint via the back door? It came from a well-known error dealer in the southern US.

Having purchased a few Israel designs on Canadian coins and being told they were from the former head of the Israel Mint, and that they were given to him by senior vp of the RCM. Whether the Israeli official requested their creations or an enticement gift by the RCM side, I don't think they were created by rogue RCM employees, thus not a back door, now this coin from Brazil, seems like a pattern, still cool to see.

Mike, it was in an old PCGS holder - just identified as a Brazilian 50c "on a foreign planchet". I knew the RCM struck those coins in the early 1970s, so I asked the dealer for better photos because I thought it might have been struck on a 1c planchet... when I saw the photos, the maple leaf caught my eye and so I snapped it up immediately. It went down to PCGS in March, for proper attribution, and True View photos (which is always worth it, in my opinion). How this coin ended up in Florida - is anyone's guess... and given the amount of "mint sport" happening in 1971 - it would not surprise me. But hypothetically, this thing could also be legit (since the dates match). Regardless, back door or not, I am enjoying torturing our mutual Brazilian friend with it...

SPP-Ottawa, from where does that info that from 1970 to 1972 the RCM struck the 50 Centavos coins? Here in Brazil there doesn't seem to be any documentation whatsoever about it...
