I've had this Morgan dollar for I don't know how long. It just seemed like an otherwise nice coin with an ugly dent in it, so I never really examined it before. As you can see from the last photo, the dent is about 10 mm wide and 1.5 mm deep. Whatever struck the coin appears to have done so at an angle, and left a ring-shaped depression at the center of the dent. On the obverse, the dent has been worn down almost flush with the hair. As someone who has been known to hit metal hard with a hammer and other steel tools, this looks to me like the result of one very hard blow by something soft enough not to smear the detail in the feathers. Sounds like lead to me. I'm not a gun guy, and I'm really not familiar at all with turn of the century ammo. Love to hear what everybody thinks.

Highly, highly doubt it. Even a .22 would leave a much larger dent. Coins are tough, and can stop bullets (under certain circumstances) but even small calibur rounds with low energy would do more. Plus, the impact is too perfectly shaped. If there was a bullet impact, the point of contact would more likely than not be less circular and more indented. More likely a failed counterstamping

It looks more like it was hammered with something.

Th flat spot on the obv suggests that this coin was resting on something solid when the rev was impacted. That alone doesn't rule out a bullet, but think it does suggest a hammer.

I'd guess a hammer as well.

An overlay is blocking the light to show the depression.

Ok, well maybe this was the silver dollar that Annie Oakley missed, she got mad and hit it with a hammer.
Can't really blame me for wishing this poor beat up coin had a more colorful past!

And yes, picture #4 shows a translucent plastic ruler laying across the center of the dent to show depth.

Might have been a 300 Winchester Magnum from a bout 10 miles away. Or a hammer

Probably a souvenir from one of Annie Oakley's shootin' exhibitions!
