What are the odds that a graded coin from a second-tier party grader (say from ANACS or ICG), rated as MS/Uncirculated, would be rated as "Detail" from a first-tier TPB (e.g., PCGS or NGC)? I am trying to decide if I should have my expensive second-tier TPG coins regraded so that they can be evaluated by the first-tier TPG. Thoughts? Experiences?

mmmmm. If the coin is actually details and not graded accordingly chances are that if submitted again, it will get the details grade. I don't think it's a matter of 1st tier or 2nd tier. I've had coins that were details and graded straight by NGC.

I have second-tier TPG graded coins that are NOT "detail." I'm a bit concerned that if I submit them to PCGS or NGC, they might come back as "detail." Personally, I can't tell the difference between a detail and non-detail coin.

If you can't tell the difference between a straight and details coin , then you shouldn't bother having your coins sent in for grading . You would be wasting too much money in submitting costs . I understand that you may not tell with every coin ,but you should have a good idea what makes for a details graded coin .

I agree with T-BOP, you should have a good idea about what you are submitting. Otherwise you're throwing expensive darts at a dartboard while dizzy and blindfolded.
Re your original question. It depends on the coin of course. Most coins that straight graded at ICG & ANACS would straight grade at PCGS & NGC IMO.

Post a couple pics on the grading forum, and see what people think.

If it will cross as a non details coins you get it back straight graded in a PCGS holder. If me back as details they won't crack it out and it will come back in the original straight graded holder. You can't do the crossover with NGC, they only accept PCGS coins for crossover.

Thanks Conder101. This is the most helpful answer I've seen. I am a novice coin collector. I can't tell the difference between a detail coins and a non-detail coin in most cases. However, I want to ensure that my coins are high-quality, uncleaned, and collectible.
Thanks again.

"Coins holdered by other grading services are not eligible for CrossOver and must be removed from their holders and submitted raw (not holdered), or they may be submitted in their holders if they are accompanied by NGC's Consent to Remove Coin(s) from Holder(s) Form."

That's not a crossover, that's NGC grading a raw coin.
