I recently bought a 2013 US mint Limited Edition Silver Proof Set for a fair bit of money off of Etsy. When I got the package I usually open the box to verify the coins are there are look about accurate. I NEVER expose the coins to air and leave them in the plastic box they come in.

*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

This time though, the plastic box looked as if it had been opened because on of the corners wasn't latched down. So upon closer inspection I looked at the coin and it appeared to have browning color around part of an edge of one of the quarters. Since I am now suspicious I have been scammed out come the gloves and I carefully (and surprisingly easily) open the plastic container containing the coins. One of the quarters seems to have a brown stripe about halfway down the side of the coin.

Im posting 2 pictures and they arent great since I only have my phone, but hopefully somebody can help me know if I got ripped off or if the thing didnt seal right at manufacturing and this is just aging.

Doesn't matter, once the set has been opened they or just normal silver proofs. Nothing special and no added value for being part of the "Limited Edition" set.

I think I am learning the Etsy lesson all too well. However, where online is a reputable place to purchase coins? With covid going around its not easy to get out and expand my collection for the moment.

The plastic encapsulations used by the mint are rather easy to open without damage. With that being the case, they are not air tight and thereby allow the outside atmosphere to slowly tone the contents over time. In the case of your 2013 set, an open corner most likely caused the brown spots described. To rectify this, on all of my proof sets, I ran a bead of clear silicone around the outer edge smoothing it flat and hardly noticed.

Unfortunately not many places today are really reputable.

It appears to me to be the correct silver quarter with some toning. In this case, I don't think that you got ripped off at all.

If the seller did not notify you in advance of your purchase that the corner was open and that the coin was inadvertently toned, than In my opinion you WERE ripped off!

'Nuff Said.
