Markroyal New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 08/09/2020 01:05 am Found this with a group of old coins. My father used to deal in coins 30 years ago and the coins were in and old box of his. This was the only one that that I can't identify. I have searched online but nothing matching this. It looks like some of the old coins from the UK. However, I believe other European countries used shillings. Can anyone assist in identifying this? Thank you! Report this Post to the Staff

In Britain there used to be a number of foreign gold coins circulating. They often had odd values when converted into £sd. People would clip gold coins or used acid to remove some of the gold, so you would use a standard weight to ensure that you weren't being cheated. In the 18th century the Portuguese moidore circulated at about 27 shillings, so my guess is that your object is a half-moidore weight. Perhaps somebody more experienced in weights from this forum could comment better. Report this Post to the Staff
