I went to the bank today looking for half dollars. The teller pulls out an envelope and says "all I have are these dirty coins, do you want them?". I immediately heard the clank of silver and said yes.

The first coin was a 1976 S silver clad Ike. Not too bad (although I was hoping for a Morgan or Peace). This is the first silver Ike I've gotten. The second coin was a 1997 American Eagle. Wow! This has never happened to me before.

How often do real silver dollars show up at the bank? I am curious to hear other experiences.

Well, this happened to me too. I was at the bank getting small dollars, but then the teller asked me if I wanted this envelope of 10 Ikes. They weren't silver, but they were the entire set, including type 1 and type 2 bicentennials.

There were the closest... other than silver quarters and the like

But WOW a silver eagle? Nice!

The silver eagle was a shock. Especially since it was bigger than the Ike. I can't believe she didn't notice. Now all I need to do is find a Morgan or Peace dollar.

While in college, in 1964, I often went to the bank for silver dollars. Morgan and Peace. D, P, S, CC, NO. How sad that out of the hundreds I looked through, I only kept about 20. Still have them today.

Funny you brought this subject up.(I struck silver yesterday) I went to the bank to dump $30. in Kennedy halves,I noticed about 20 or so halves in her coin tray and 2 had all silver edges I asked If I could buy them. After getting a odd look she said yes and I got 2=64P 1=66D all VF. None of the others I need it for my collection.

Seeking :Who cares I struck Silver.

Over 3 years of searching I have found 2 Peace dollars from banks and one 1976 silver clad IKE. Definitely not an easy find!

I have started asking everytime I'm at the bank if they have any of those "big ol dollars".
So far, I have not gotten any.
I try to find the most clueless teller I can.

Never gotten an eagle but I scored a silver Ike about a week ago. I asked a teller for some halves and she said they had some in the vault and walked off to get them. The teller next to her then playfully said if I wanted them I had to take the handful she had in the tray. I looked over as she said this and saw a stack of large dollars, the silver glare was quite distracting from one of the coins and how she couldn't see it was beyond me. I said sure I'll take those and quickly slid them in my pocket. It was a nice silver Ike. The other teller then they brought out an envelope with $61.50 written on it.I bought it and they said to make sure I come back and get those coins because they hated them. The bag had a half dozen 40%s in it. The Ike was mint, must have recently been pulled from the set.

I went to the bank last week and asked for halves. Instead, I was shown a whole tray of Ikes. It was one of those old banker trays that used to hold silver dollars. That day it held 80 Ikes. Originally, the teller said all the slots were full. So, I bought all the remaining dollars and they gave me the tray too!

I wonder what had been in the other 20 slots?
