He was able to jam in all the key words; unfortunately they weren't true. Small beads, prooflike fields, few contact marks.

Okiecoiner and others.
here it is. this subject has been discussed many times with images, graded and raw. so, seriously most of you who are missing this coin , or wanting this coin, should actually recognize it just by looking at it.
It is scarcer than a hens teeth!
I would be happy to send everyone a blow up of images side by side in detail. Just ask for it via PM.

I disagree that the small beads variety is rare, there is a bag or more of them, like 200 to 300 pieces, but there is a demand at around 3000 to 4000 bucks

To determine a 1966 Small beads you don't even need to look at bead placement
Just compare the suspect coin to a 1965 Type one or two small beads obverse .
Another unusual aspect of this issue .....one side is business strike and the other
is PL .
Also consider the source and price you are being asked to pay .
All 485 are still around and there are none in the wild , so to speak .
The coin is a known back doored issue , manufactured in the Hull
numismatic department in 1966 and miracle of miracles they all ended
up with a very prominent Ontario coin dealer who then pieced them out
To other dealers in North America . NONE I Repeat NONE were
available through the normal course of daily commerce.
That means you could not go to your local financial institution
in 1966 and buy a bag of Silver Dollars and hope to find one!

I have no idea where you get your information from, as your pricing suggestion is way off the mark.
My current 66SB is the second one I ever physically held in my hand and owned.
The first one I was able to obtain by a "fluke" about 10 years ago.
And it was PCGS graded at PL63. The current one is PL 65 NGC.
( see this post: http://goccf.com/t/378321 )
I believe, but am not sure, ICCS would probably certify these as MS?
And yes, you are right saying there is a demand at the @ 3-4K level. US$ perhaps. And even then you will have a lot of resistance finding it.
Have you seen any sold at that level....any grade?.
This coin is multi-multiple scarcer than the 48 dollar.
and yes, Pacific is 100% correct. OBV and REV are absolute giveaways, followed by the I location exactly between the beads or slightly off the bead.
I go by first looking at the beads, then at the year, because nearly all the time the year says 1965.
Once you have seen a SB, any grade, you will recognize it immediately seeing the obv only.
Then you just hope it to be a 66.
I strongly believe that many collectors (and some dealers) would not even recognize it. Even with coin in hand!

Pacificoin: I have seen this statement posted twice now. Is there a source for this? I don't doubt that it might be true, but my 2019 Charlton Catalogue says that the small beads 1966 dollars were sent from Hull to a bank branch instead of back to the RCM in Ottawa for melting.

If there is a piece of literature or an article pointing to this story, I would like to see it. Like I said, I am sure it is true, but to this relative newcomer to the hobby (only collecting since 2017), it seems like folklore.

When there was shows around the GTA every two weeks or so, you will see one of these graded, dealer will be asking depending on grade 4 to 5 grand but they always say open to offer. My memory is terrible now but Bell auction or TCNC a year or two ago sold an example for around 3500.00, there is a BIN on ebay from a very knowledgeable dealer for 5000.00, almost sure if you offered 4300.00 or so this coin will be bought. I thought there was only 200 to 300 examples apparently there is a few more out there. There maybe 10,000 1948 dollars still around a ms 63 is around 2500.00 so between the the 3 or 4 TPG probably a couple hundred graded at this level

it is simple.
just make an offer
if the seller (known to most of us here) is hungry, he might take it.
If not, he might just take 4995.plus taxes, as he is in BC
good luck

" Virtually all 1966 Canada Dollars are of the Large Bead variety, though an unknown mintage of perhaps fewer than 500 are mules pairing a Small Beads obverse with a 1966-dated reverse and were somehow struck at the Hull facility of the Royal Canadian Mint - how these mules came to be is unknown but suspected to be intentional " Source is PCGS article written by Joshua McMorrow-Hernandez.
Much like the Other headliners of the 1965 to 1967 period Double and triple strikes of 1967 Halves and Dollars , Diving Geese
and all the other stuff , purposely made for a ready and willing coin market that existed at the time .

I was offered a PGCS 64 in an old green label holder a few years ago for 3500 buck, it started to tone along one edge as errors goes this one just misses the wow factor for me in hand you have to read the label to see what it is, so I passed on this variety. As I said before there is a demand for this coin at a certain price point, but it's cool that you have a 66 grade.
