Hi,

I'm hoping I have the correct forum for this information , however I was looking to find the translations of the obverse/reverse of what I believe to be a Abbasid Caliphate fals coin. I'm assuming it contains the ruler and location information. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

@harvey, can you please post the diameter and weight of this piece please? It seems cut down, but maybe just off center and/or struck on an undersized planchet. Also, is it silver or copper? In other words, how close are your pics to the true color of this coin?

The first pic is "There is no god but Allah alone. There are no others with Him" its always the same. The mint would be in the lettering around the central inscription. I doubt it can be made out. You might be able to find a match to the reverse though.

A Fals would be copper.

It seems to be from the mint of Dimashq (Damascus), dated AH 182, though not perfectly clear. As already mentioned, the central inscription on the obverse is the Kalima, "There is no god but Allah, [He is] alone; there are no others with Him". The margin contains the mint and date formula, only partly visible, with the date written out in words: [In the name of Allah was struck this fals of Dimash]q, year two and eighty [and one hundred]". The reverse center continues the religious message of the obverse, "Muhammad is the apostle of Allah". The reverse margin (only partly visible) names the 'Abbasid caliph Harun (al-Rashid) and the governor 'Isa b. 'Aban: "[by his order, 'Abd Allah Harun] commander of the faithful, from the hands of [Isa bin 'Aban]". Album 284; SICA-2, 1446.

Fortunately, the final "q" of Dimashq is visible, along with the decade and digit of the date. Just enough to find it in the catalogues without much trouble!

My apologies in that I should have provided more information; I ran the photos through a filter to gain as much detail as possible and it is copper. Unfortunately I do not have a scale and would not have been able to provide the weight. However the information that has been provided is exactly what I needed. Many thanks to all of you for the help.
