I took a chance and put in a bid on a 1911-S Lincoln Cent with a not overly great photo, but the price was right and I won it for $30.

Here is the seller's photo:

When it arrived today I found it an intriguing coin. It appears to be full red and it looks original mint red to me (although I am far from an expert and have been burned by "altered color" before").

But the color and luster look good. The coin also has a carbon spot on the right wheat stalk as well as other little dirt spots on it, so that makes me think it hasn't been messed with.

Lincoln's head is weakly struck, but there is a corresponding weakly struck area on the reverse on the MER in AMERICA. The rest of the obverse looks very crisp, especially the date and "S" mint mark.

The reverse wheat stalks and the rest of the lettering, with the exception of the MER in AMERICA are all sharply struck.

I am wondering if it is an uncleaned high grade coin that has a striking issue on the head and the corresponding area on the reverse.

Your thoughts and comments are most welcome. Thank You!

These photos, taken in sunlight, don't capture the full red as well as the others, but the details are sharper.

It's a puzzler. My first reaction was "VF details, cleaned and re-toning", but your observations seem valid. Looks like mint luster in the devices. I'm stumped.

Not genuine. 100% Fake. Return if you can. The fuzzy devices were the first giveaway. But look at the date and MM. They're completely wrong. Like, not even close.

A puzzler for sure but I think Grape Collects might have something there . If not that's some heck of a trumpet tail . Really weird 11-S , those corrosion spots even look strange like they are just laying on the coin and can be easily removed .

This is a little odd. Hope it's not too late to ask that you post a nice, sharp, close-in shot of the date and mint mark. Sunlight or equivalent as the light source.

Here is the best close up I can get.

With the carbon spot I never even considered it a counterfeit.

I have contacted ebay about a return.

I think it would help many of us if our resident experts could break down what they're seeing--what makes this coin counterfeit.

Well, I'll be!!

The link ijn1944 provided is one I posted about another 1911-S four years ago.

I forgot all about that. Some of us are just slow to learn, I guess.
