Hello,
I've been pecking away at a shilling set of British rulers, and am to the point where the only ones I still need are George I and earlier. I just won the below Elizabeth I, and I'm actually surprised the seller came down so far from his price. Did I do ok?

That depends - did you pay the $349.99 or some lower offer?
Elizabeth I coinage is fairly common over here - probably the easiest hammered to get hold of. The coin you have bought is not bad - the challenge is always to get a good portrait on the larger hammered coin, and yours is OK.

I offered $250 and the seller accepted it. I guess the fact that he took it outright and didn't counter made me second guess it.

Not having a good local coin shop, I'm at the mercy of ebay and vcoins. And coins like these are outside of what I've collected in the past. So I do value the input

A good tip is to view ebay.co.uk - even if you don't buy there, you can see realistic prices for hammered coins. Also click on the "sold listings" button so you see what people are actually paying rather than the sometimes crazy asking prices.

Beautiful, looks good to me. Nice piece too, clean and not clipped. Love the mintmark and the Queen looks sharp.

You did well and are now invested in the fraternity of British Coin collectors.

Thank you for the input. Can anyone help me attribute it to a specific type? The listing says bust 2 but the photos I see of that don't seem to have the same pattern on the blouse as this one...
Just pointing me to an online catalog of types is fine, I like to bookmark stuff like that for future use

OK the coin you have is Elizabeth I Sixth issue, S2577 in the Spink Coins of England Catalgue, dating 1584-6. The Escallop mint mark does not occur for the 2nd issue coins. BUT the bust types for the S2577 include type 3B, which is what I think you have, and that was also used on the 2nd issue coinage, so the confusion is understandable.
Here is the Numista entry for Sixth issue:
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces16763.html
and here for the 2nd issue:
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces52666.html
which is a better match for your bust type.
I hope that helps!

Thank you, that's exactly the info I was looking for. Thank you for the numista link as well. I'm used to typing the varieties of Roman coins, but this is a new collection for me. Thanks again!
