I need a bunch of wheats for my collection (just started again after decades) and I have tried roll hunting, but I have to admit that it seems like a needle/haystack kinda scenario. In one bank box I found exactly one wheat. So I am thinking about buying gobs of wheats on ebay and just sorting through them. But I can imagine that this will yield almost entirely the common dates, etc. Has anyone had any luck buying wheats on ebay? There is one seller there who is offering " .25 lbs" of wheats for 12 bucks. How many pennies is that anyway?

1/4LB? That's strange. 3 rolls of cents equals a pound. If that's the case. He is way over priced. I would only pay $3-5 a roll. Unless they where BU or VG+ or something.

Thats what I figured. It seemed over priced. 3-5 $$ per roll seems like a good price I guess but I think the lowest I have seen posted so far is at least 6 bucks. There is one that is 2500 pennies for 150 bucks which works out to about 3 bucks a roll. That might be kind of fun to sort through. It sounds way too good to be true, however. Does this forum have list of known ebay scams anywhere? That would be useful to the collectors here.

453.5 grams per pound divided by 4 = 113.38 grams 113.38 grams divided by 3.1 grams per coin = 36.6 or either 36 to 37 coins.

The answer is 359. At least that's how many pennies a quarter pounder costs at my local McDonald's.

There are no truly unsearched wheats on ebay. Many of us have confirmed this the hard way. I honestly believe the 'successful' sellers of "unsearched" wheats just pepper them with better dates now and again. The sort of money they are making, they can afford a semi-key here and there. If you search some posts on the subject, we have dug up sellers that claim to have found hoards of "shotgun" rolls of unsearched wheats... and the rolls will have a better date showing the the ends. Then we searched the sellers' completed auctions and found them buying old, unused shotgun rolls! Found them buying shotgun roll crimpers! Found them even buying the same exact date single wheats that are showing up on the ends of their old hoard rolls! I normally have much more faith in people on ebay, but I am very jaded on this one subject. My .02...

I agree with ratio411..There are some nice ebay sellers that are honest about what they are selling and some good ones who say their rolls are not searched and throw in a nice date to keep you coming back or atleast to get your money's worth. I would ask around on this forum for reputable sellers or once you have reached 50 posts, post a "wanted to buy" on this forum...lots of good honest help here. Good Luck!

Hi guys, I'm new here and just posted on the "introduce yourself" thread.
So by reading this thread, I'm guessing my local coin dealer that charges $2/roll for wheats is pretty good, huh?
He also will buy them for back from me for $0.02 each. I'm guessing that this a good price also?

The double cheeseburgers are a much better deal. They have about 3 oz of meat instead of four but other than that they basicly have the same toppings including two slices of cheese. But for what one quarterpounder cost you can get three double cheeseburgers. That's 2.5 times as much meat, four more slices of cheese and more of everything else. It's a no brainer, the double cheese is the way to go. Don't want three? Get two, it's still more product than the QP ad for signficantly less money.

I love double cheeseburgers. Always have, since they were introduced, which I think was in the late 60's. The fact that they are now $1 is just extra special.
But I had to pick on the QP to make my little joke.
TreasHunt -- a hen weighs about 3 pounds, no?

That's an excellent price and you can get more than 2 cents back out of them. Heck I'll buy them for 3 cents!

Looking for wheat's is fun, but takes a long time to collect a set if you are roll searching, and you will be lucky to find anything older than 1934 or so. If you do have a local coin store I would suggest there first and see if they sell by rolls and loose coins. My local store does not sell them by rolls because they are bought up too quick and a waste of time for them to put them together to do so. They do have loose coins and have them split into three different groups: 1. Older coins in lower to mid range grades split into two different groups on the counter. 2. A bucket of 'unsearched' that rarely has anything it because there are a few people that buy them all when they know they exist. I lucked out and bought a few dollars worth and wish I would have bought them all. Most of them were common dates and mid grade, but the few that were not more than made up what I paid for them. This bucket is for large amounts of coins they buy from someone and do not want to, or have the time, to search the entire group. 3. A bucket that has a small amount of wheat's from someones collection that are gone through (eventually) and separated out into the front containers or carded up and put into cases. Since I have been going there forever I lucked out and recently went through this container and found a 1909VDB in F12, 1914S F30, and a couple other coins that filled some holes on the mass number of sets I have going. If I have time I am going back this week and buying the entire group. When it comes to ebay, listen to the advice given, 99.9% of what is listed is common dates in low grades. If this does not bother you, then buy a few and see what happens from there, but do NOT overpay for them just because of what is on the end of the roll. I have bought a few things and knew that I would never find a key/semi date and was not shocked at getting all common dates, but every once in awhile you do a get a nicer coin that what you already have and can upgrade it. The worse case scenario is that you now have something to trade to others, someone is always wanting to buy more to add to their set.
