All the scattered dots/metal bits (sugary/sandy look) around "Canada" on the reverse as well as the extra metal at 9 o'clock on the obverse also screams fake.

If fake, it will have a different ping tone to a genuine silver dollar of this period.

Interesting. The 1948 $1 has been described to me by two people who are experts as a coin that is considered to be scarce but is in fact pretty easy to find. One of those coins that you can find at any decent sized coin show. Both people felt that it was therefore overvalued - this was in reference to other coins where the picture is reversed.
The excessive influence of the initial mint run is one factor for this. That is, not many coins were made but they were hoarded and saved, in comparison to other coins that were made in decent numbers but then discarded, melted down or otherwise disappeared.
I'm wondering if it fact, the available 1948 pool is just flooded with counterfeits? I've never seem one of these but I'll be on the look out.

Almost all key dates have been faked, why would you fake a 66 dollar, as for the 48 dollar in ms 64 or higher just look at auction prices, the market speaks.

Just buy Mike Marshall's CD about fakes. $40 well spent you will find a whole ton of fake coins, all Canadian , there.
Mike might even chime in on this one!
oh, ping test! I think you are fooling yourself as the new fakes look old and similar to this coin, are fairly correct with the alloy mix and weight. Chinese are using computer programming now, like CAD machines etc. and the right alloy mix.

Mikey's CD's and presentations are mostly about Chinese fakes, some of which are pretty good nowadays. This shouldn't fool anyone, but there's sucker's galore that believe anything in the printed word is absolutely true (or they watch Fox News). Mikes CD's are excellent, as are his talks..

Okiecoiner,
there are way too many collectors who do not have a 48 but who like to say it is a fake. Not saying anyone here. Just in general., just to say something. And many have no idea that it is not only 48s that are faked...pretty well any silver dollar is subject until proven otherwise. Perhaps MM should consider updating the CD and include the near "perfect" Chinese crap. and increase his price to $ 50.. well worth it. The grey color and the grainy appearance just simply are not a safe indicators any longer. The make them in many ways including tungsten cores with 80% silver very thick plating. Remember way back the libanese fakes..... they are still around!
