East Germany 1979 5 Pfennig With Die Chip

Call me blind but I didn't see it when I picked this out of a junk bin. It is raised and it's there permanently What would cause this?

I'd say the coin is low MS and has no damage anywhere, just a few scratches on PFENNIG and at the top of the 5.

It looks like a chipped die to me. Little pieces of the die can break off after use or overuse. What you see is the metal from the planchet that filled the chip.

Maybe a piece of the die that somehow broke off? Could be the same as in this case:

with the others. That position where the leaf nears the 5 makes sense...it would be a weaker spot on the die.
Nice shots of a big chip! I'm going to move this one to the error/variety section.

Side note: That coin is from the German Democratic Republic (GDR, aka East Germany). Like most other GDR coins it is an aluminum piece.
