Hey guys I am just curious what causes this extra thickness on the mint mark?

Actually that is one of the examples of a broken post issue on the die. (Leaves the inside of the mintmark filled) I can't tell for sure it is is also one of the damaged mintmark punch issues that was common on several denominations of that year.

Hard to tell with the contact marks on your mintmark. Either way, there is no premium for these as they happened to several dies, making them common that year.

The OPs' coin does not look like a damaged punch to me,it looks "punched" or "pushed" like being hit in circulation or even intentionally done ...PMD.

it does look round in the lower corner, and pushed up from the bottom
