This shows you all how naive we are here in New Zealand

(Completely safe and not on the paywall!)

A metal detectorists found an 1817 Sixpence in Central Auckland and it is described as rare and in great nick. He thinks it is only worth hundreds. Looking at it, I would say its F/VF (The photos are much worse than my average photo Boy do I have news for him, if it was Uncirculated I would guess low - mid hundreds, here its low to mid two figures.

The coin is probably worth around $20 - $50 at most. The tone of the article makes it sound like people have never heard of such coins.

Auckland was only settled in 1840, so this coin was probably lost in the 1840s or 1850s.

I am seriously thinking of inviting the discoverer over to show him my 1816 Halfcrown and 1820 Shilling which will probably cause him to have a heart attack and the coffin blow will be my Commonwealth Halfcrown!

Definitely not rare in this condition in the UK,
although they may be hard to find with this date in NZ.

Australia and NZ both used British currency in normal circulation for many decades. Relatively easy to find 1817 sixpences in this condition in Australia, as currency on ships and British colonies circulated with complete freedom. They were part of British 'Great Recoinage'.

Australia's first shipment of newly minted silver coin specie from The Royal Mint was in 1825, so that a sixpence of 1817 in Australia must have been in change from passengers and crew off the sailing ships.

Maybe it was part of pocket change of a NZ or British passenger, UK to NZ.

To be fair the detectorist said it was rare to find such a coin, not that the coin itself is rare. That assertion was made by the person writing the header.
Great article. Thanks for sharing.

I would certainly agree with the detectorist's statement.
