I'd like to get some thoughts on this 1851-C $1 gold piece.

The luster appears very subdued, possibly from dipping, with little circulation wear evident. It should straight grade as an AU50 or 53 IMO.

Something in an earlier life going on inside the wreath, maybe an old cleaning.

I don't disagree with any of your comments. It's a tough coin to grade, even in hand, because it's only about 1/2 inch in diameter. This will be going to PCGS once I get a batch of coins together. I'll be very happy if it gets a mid-AU straight grade.
