Is it normal for newer penny rolls to have so much spotting on coins? Lately every roll I buy whether 2017-D or 16-D etc....has lots of spotting. Do I need another source or is this common? Any thoughts

It all depends on where and how they were stored . The environment is everything with OBW rolls of Lincolns . Sometimes you get spotted rolls but most of the time the later dates are pretty good . It's a hit or miss venture .

Need more information . Where Did you buy them , I'm assuming they were bank wrapped . Once you open them the person you bought them from usually will not accept them back . The photo you supplied is actually not that bad . I've seen worse . Either keep them as is or go through them for errors .

The Lincoln shield cents are pretty bad even new. You'll get random zinc zits and black spots even under perfect conditions. It's truly sad the legacy of the Lincoln Cent. Pre 1982 the material was better.
