Any idea how this could have happened?

Hard to imagine how this would occur post mint.

I am in two minds about this coin.
1) It could be a partial collar error, or
2) the coin may have taken a horizontal hit in the edge = damage.

The reason for either of these two cases being possible is due to the
1) varying width of the upturned rim seen in the picture of the reverse or
2) the variation of the thickness of the coin at the location in question.

Would need to examine it more closely with a high powered loupe.

Thanks for the reply Sel.

I'm favoring something like 'struck outside collar' - thinking it might be unusual to inflict that type of 1/2 rim damage post mint. If you have a copy of Rennicks Australian errors check P112 for something similar.

Photos going off to Ian McConnelly for his evaluation.

i believe it happened after the coin was minted, just for the fact the edge is bulged out.. If it was a faulty blank before the strike, it wouldn't protrude after the strike..

Thanks Nevol.
Didn't realise he had passed away - sad to hear.
His book is very useful for Aussie errors.

Interestingly his email is still accepting mail, but no reply from anyone so far.
