So, I got my collection together and got a "heavy duty" plastic shelving unit. I expected some bowing, but figured it would hold. And it did...for a couple months. Then one night a loud crash from upstairs. I find this...

Coins-Are-Heavy.-Shelving-Failure.

So I got a heavy duty metal unit. And it immediately bowed a tad. You may not be able to tell in the pic. But you can see it sitting there. I may have to get like an industrial type unit. LOL

And then the floor/foundation would give out!

I'm a bit of a collector of many things and can't resist a bargain. My relatives/friends joke that one day I'm going to turn a two story house into a one story house.

My structural engineer colleagues have said that is highly unlikely since modern building codes have greatly improved and homes today can take a lot of weight. Watching episodes of hoarders online seems to bear this out.

Well, I also collect fossils, guns and models to name a few. The fossils, at least the heaviest ones, are in the basement. LOL

this is a 100 plus year old house. I may be at the load limits for the floor. LOL

I use a wooden bookcase (I'll throw up a photo later). All the heavy stuff goes on the lowest shelf so that it's directly supported by the floor. The light stuff (bags, books, things that don't go in the safe) go on the other shelf.

I am almost brought to tears by your selfless offer sir. But I will bear this burden on my own shoulders.

Heavy duty industrial shelving is the way to go. At one point we had (literally) tons of coins over 5 industrial shelving units.
Rest in Peace

Yep , that's what I'm afraid of happening to my set up . Maybe those shelving racks that Home Depot uses .

Very nice offer @chipjones! I was thinking along the same lines: would be happy to swap out some of my feather-light Aluminum tokens for those heavy gold, silver, and copper coins you are stacking @srd.

Don't use shelves. Just lay all your coins on the floor.

Maybe get a second metal shelving unit, and spread out the load.
