This German State Thaler was discovered and then damaged to prevent circulation. The scrape marks cut through the silver wash to reveal copper. Some fake coins are defaced in different ways so merchants do not accept them. This one was holed.

Sometimes, shopkeepers and bankers would nail counterfeit coins to a wall or pillar of their premises, to remind themselves (and their customers) of counterfeits that had been found in circulation.
