The "In God We Trust" part, when looked at closely, the "We" is engraved on top of the "beard". I cant get that on camera well...

to CCF. It is heat damage from a campfire or a house fire is my guess. John1

Hey thanks everyone! :) I am not completely sold on fire damage. My husband does demolition and deconstruction of old buildings. I have seen some fire damaged coins before, but none like this. This coin was found in an unknown old building somewhere in Montana during a demo. My reasoning is, when held it still has integrity and does not feel as though its been through high temps, its not thin or light. The smear of beard area is thick and consistent. The shadows detract from being able to see this. No signs of similar heating effects on the opposite side. Oh yea, the "We" as well as the "T" at the end of Trust are perfectly intact on top of the smear that I think looks like a beard. Just my observations. What leads you to think fire damage?

It is definitely heat damage. The heat causes the outer clad layer to separate and bubble up. They show up here all the time.

also agree with the others, it's heat damage, not necessarily from structure fire, but probably a blow torch

I'm thinking damage caused by the focused application of a heat source--perhaps a small hobby torch. Wasn't struck that way in the mint.

Post mint heat damage for sure. We see a lot of heat damaged coins here. It could have been a blow torch or other centralized source, but definitely heat damage. to the CCF!
