The Mexican coin is a fantasy coin that is meant to resemble what a gold peso of Emperor Maximilian I would have looked like. Maximilian never issued a one peso coin.
My understanding is that there is a Mexican tradition that involves giving gold coins for a certain special occasion (perhaps at a wedding). These Maximilian fantasies were apparently made to serve as a smaller substitute for the real thing. They vary in gold quantity and the details of design. A few people collect them by die variety, but they are generally recognized as having a low value.

Both appear to be fantasy coins.
Probably no gold in either, altho they may be plated.

From what I understand, thses tiny coins are exactly that, fantasy pieces. I do believe they are 9K gold. I could be wrong though.

i think I have something similar. I wasn't able to find much info on mine either, but I think its some sort of wedding token they are given out at weddings for good luck or something like that.   |

Interesting token...Google translates the reverse as "I remember marriage".

I had a quick peek and ebay is awash with these , most are listed as 10k gold but very small 10mm. doesn't mean they are gold though I suppose , ive seen them at 99c |

Here's a copy and paste of an older post of mine from a different thread... (edit, with picture! and no smilies  ) Note that the gold 1865 Maximillian Mexican pesos are fantasy coins, or wedding coins and are only gold plate(hge-heavy gold electroplate...4 atoms thick instead of the usual 2). I have earlier examples('70s to perhaps '95) that have the gold content marked on the coin. These coins would be solid 8kt to 14kt and can be marked on the either side.(If you would like pix just say da word).If the coin is not marked I would think it's only plated and see many a novice get burned on ebay...way too many to warn. They should be checking feedback...the warnings are rite there to read. ...a plethora of tiny, modern, cheap like borsch fantasy Emperor Maximillian Mexican gold pesos(bagged by hundreds). If they ain't marked they ain't even worth postage at cost(gold plated base metal). They were also mentioned in the medals/medallion/token topic. These types of trinkets are also now produced as Krugerrands, St. Gauden Double Eagles, and others... just as little trinkets though. So these gold minis are not of value to the majority people here. Here's a picture of an older marked one... marked as to gold content that is. But they are tiny, small as a pencil eraser. Some specs on the one pictured; 8kt 625mg 10mm

That info by IBGolden maybe should be coupled with KurtS's findings on my coin and stickied up somewhere.Theres hundreds of those 10mm coins on ebay if not thousands,only a matter of time before lookalikes of mine show up. We could save members a lot of aggrevation and frustration not to mention money. |
