Hi. I found this in my change a while back and I don't know why anyone would stamp a "4" on a 1967 1C. I have heard of counterstamping coins in the 1800's but not the 20th century. Does anyone have any idea why anyone would or who did this? Sorry the pic isn't that good. I need to work on taking pics of coins.

A couple of possibilities occur to me...
- Someone just got a nice new set of metal punches and wanted to test them out on something.
- Someone needed a small, round piece of metal with a "4" on it, and using a cent was cheaper than going out and buying a blank piece of metal.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I agree with Sap. Let's face it, US cents are put through the mill all the time. How many have you put on railroad tracks to squish? They're the first thing people use if they need a round piece of metal for something. There should be an agency for the abuse of Lincoln...

There are literally thousands of different counterstamps on Lincoln cents in many, many different forms.

Thanks for the info. These explanations make sense. It is still interesting to find this in my spare change cause you don't see it everyday.

I've got a couple of Lincolns like that, I can't recall what the numbers are for sure, but it seems like 4 was one of them. I'll have to dig it out and see.

I don't have any with numbers, but I have some Kennedy counterstamps, and several different state outlines. I guess some private mint type place was selling a set of state cents at one time, and I got some of the escapees.
