Hi guys! I love to collect coins with a nice background story. Therefore I'm eager to get a Heraclius hexagram for my ancient coins collection.

I'd like to have your advice on this coin below. It's from a seller on VCoins. The legend is entirely readable, well atleast on the reverse. The hexagrams were minted during the troublesome times of the Sassanid Wars and thus are often weakly struck and unsharp. But the story about why this coin is issued and how is incredible. Byzantine siler is rarer than their bronze denomination alternatives.

So what I like to ask is if the price is reasonable. Should I have patience and wait for a cheaper alternative as time goes by? I must say that it is an incredible rare sight to see a full legend on these coins. The total price for me including tax and shipping fee will be around $ 230. I think these coins usually sell for $ 100 - 150. Is the quality of this coin worth it?

Advice-On-Byzantine-Hexagram

Please help me out, thank you!

Agreed with your points of interest. I suppose, the answer is and always will be - how much monetarily do you assign to the superior detail. Its a steep asking, but one which undoubtedly is informed by the same pluses (and they are not unsubstantial with a piece of well-struck Byzantine silver).

Ultimately, you have done your research, you know what you want, and so (and dont answer these questions publicly), what you have to ask yourself is "will I miss that extra bit of capital?" The rule of thumb in collecting, is buy the best THAT YOU CAN AFFORD. If you will miss a meal, give it a miss. Otherwise, why not enjoy your hard earned money - this is a hobby after all.

This being said, I am a very stingy man (though not for the right thing / trip / experience), just reach out to the seller and see if there is a little wiggle room for negotiation. As a professional coin dealer myself (also a collector, so dont worry), I can tell you that you can almost certainly get something knocked off.

I hope you score this one! :)

It's not a bad coin and you are correct that Byzantine silver coins are scarce. Based on strike and condition I think the price in a bit on the high end. If you are not in any hurry I would look around a bit more.

Having a quick look through results at CNG, the asking price of $180 seems very reasonable considering the quality. The larger question is whether it still makes sense for Europeans to buy relatively inexpensive coins from American dealers.

Thank you! I've left a message and offer. Let's see if the seller is willing.

True! Collection better quality pieces is so much more satisfying. Though I hope not to overpay.

@quint, a nice one I agree. To @kushanshah's point you might consider also shopping on the ma-shops website, although many firms seems to list one both platforms.

I prefer ma-shops as I 'm European. But this seller on V-coins has the only coin with a full legend (for a reasonable price)!
