@that, first welcome to CCF. Second, that earthen coloring often appears on coins that have been environmentally toned. With that said, please post the weight of this quarter and we should be able tell for sure if it has a missing clad layer.

it looks like a Metal Detector find to me. Where it has been in the ground for a while.

If it were missing a clad, the color would be a lot darker and the coating is wearing off the highest areas of the design turning back to the natural color. Just a spender.
