Hello everyone another newbie silly question. What is the highest grade a circulated coin can achieve? If I understand correctly it can't be an MS grade unless it's an uncirculated coin. Like a mint set or proof set. Example say you find a State Quarter in really great shape in your pocket change? The only ones worth any money are in a high MS state. So there isn't any reason to send it in to be slabbed because it's circulated and will never be MS state right. Just trying to figure out the process so I don't waste my money for nothing, and maybe in the process someone will answer other peoples questions too. Anyway I would love to hear any insight you wouldn't mind sharing. Thanks everyone!!

Technically, a coin found in circulation could receive an MS grade from a TPG. In the end, all that matters is the condition of the coin, not where it came from. Learning to grade yourself will go a long way in determining if any coin is worth submitting.

Yeah, "uncirculated" is a bit of a misnomer. So you could find an MS coin in pocket change. But it would likely be low to mid MS at best. The coins that come from mint and proof sets (as I understand it) come from a different part of the mint. With better machinery to make them. Resulting in stronger strikes and likely higher grades. With things like mint or proof sets, silver American Eagles, modern commemorative coins they will usually be a 68 69 or 70. Coins made for general circulation I would be surprised to see anything over a 64 or 65. Even if you could go straight to the mint and pick it off the assembly line yourself.

Also, the minting process has gotten better over the years. For an example, an '86 American eagle (the first year they made them) rarely gets a 70. But a 2020? I would be surprised if you didn't get a 70.

Not a silly question at all!

It sounds from what you say that you are planning on sending in coins to a grading company to try to get high MS grades with a hope of making profit from them. Many people do this without understanding the grading systems well enough.

An MS coin simply means its in a state having no wear - like it left the mint. All coins made for circulation are ejected form the machine into a large bin, and others freshly ejected coins fall on top of them.

I have heard people say any coin actually found in circulation is going to be MS63 at best due to the dings etc. from the minting process (as described above). While I cannot verify this exact grade, I can say that roll searching has shown it will be very, very rare indeed to find a coin that somehow managed to escape damage at the mint and damage when put into the public.

An awful lot of slabbed coins exist that are pocket change value b/c people are willing to gamble they might "hit the jackpot." It generally is said that if a coin does not have a value of 150.00, you lose money on slabbing.

before you go lining the pockets of the grading companies, it would be good, instead, to study the game of grading coins and what a coin might be assigned when sent to a company. That education will keep the money in your own pocket.

If you value your money, post pics here and ask CCF what people here think the grade might be before sending anything in.

It also would be smart to do some homework on the alleged expertise of the grading companies. The marketers for the companies have done their job very well, but personal homework will help you understand reality a bit better.

Note this is not saying slabs are no good. Many people enjoy them. Just be educated to know the facts. There is a reason we at CCF say to "Buy the coin and not the slab."

And here is a great read on the reality of slabbing companies at the start:

Grading is all about wear, a coin can be circulated and not show signs of wear. I have found thousands of mint state coins while searching bank rolls. A few of them I even sent to PCGS and they came back mint state.

If you think about it, it makes sense. If I find a mint state coin in circulation and just show you that one coin not knowing where it came from, and you see no wear, you'd say it's mint state. THE SOURCE DOES NOT MATTER!

One in a while coins from either a collection, coin store robbery, etc. get into change. Then if and when you find one or more, you end up with a coin of possibly a high grade if not already gone through to much circulating.

Welcome to the forum! The best explanation to your question are those West Point quarters. All are from circulation only (none set aside for sets) and the highest grade thus far in any third party encapsulation is an MS68. Conversely, the majority are in the MS65 range. Other denominations would grade similar, dependent upon time in circulation.
