Can anyone provide any information about this small American note? It's about 104mm x 51mm. Uniface. It says, "Twenty five cents payable to the bearer in trade or current bank bills". It's hand signed with a date of June 26 1837.

Thanks!

That looks like an obsolete note. Thousands were issued by banks, shops, towns pre 1860. They no longer have any face value as they are NOT US issues. I never saw that one so I don't know who issued it. Here is an example of a $1 issued by the state bank of NJ. No longer has any face value but has collector value. See if the back has a name/place that issued it.

It's uniface, so nothing on the back. On the left edge it says J. L. Whaites 549 B Way and the right edge says E. P. Whaites 18 Courtlandt St.

Those are both NYC addresses. 549 Broad Way was built in 1900 so whatever was there before was torn down and Courtland (or Cortland) is the WTC location so whatever was there was also torn down.

The Whaites of NYC must have owned some type of commerce and issued notes. The condition of your note isn't terrible but that stain will affect value. As this is a piece that I can't find anything on, I can't help you with who issued it. Since its an obsolete note it has collector value, but you have to sell it to find out what it is.
