I don't have one or think I do, but I'd love to know how to identify one in case I come across one. Does anyone know any markers for the proof? They look very similar to business strikes in my opinion, so I'm hoping I can find other ways to identify it.

Do you mean potentially finding a circulated proof?

This book may help, I'd recommend a copy in hand as the photos and scans
online aren't the best, but it's a good reference in the mean time. Page 50
is the Chapter on Proofs and 97 starts in on the die diagnostics of the coin
you are looking for.

Book: The Complete Guide to Shield and Liberty Head Nickels By Gloria Peters
and Cynthia Mohon

It's available on the Newman Numismatic Portal. https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/book/555394

One plus side is a lot of them are out there PCGS estimates at least 3000
struck of the No Cents variety, a popular variety as it was a new design.

@spruett001, I am trying to find a circulates proof and maybe cherry-pick one at some point.
@westcoin, thanks for the recommendation! I'll check it out.

QuarterHoarder72 if you haven't used NNP yet, click on the link below the small book like frame to take you to the archived site, there you can see the book in a larger size and go full screen too. If you scroll down you will see a bunch of links to the files of the book, there will be a PDF link you can right click and save this file to your computer, or click on it which will then open up yet another version of the book in a new tab, (as long as you have the ability to read a PDF file in your browser) this will be a PDF which can be downloaded, I've learned to save the time of loading it as a PDF by just right clicking the PDF link at the archive page.

There are a ton of great books available this way on NNP, just check out the books by title or author links, and don't forget all the cool periodicals too, from clubs like the EAC, Colonial Collectors, Longacre's Ledger, NBS, Gobrecht Seated Club, etc. so many it would take a year or too just to read them all, and more are getting added all the time.

Seriously the NNP is best single resource there is for Numismatics online - period.
