I'd bet everyone here would stop to pickup a penny in the parking lot, but just in case you don't...the other day my wife picked one up and it was a 1913. It had a few new scratches from being run over on the obverse but the reverse was unmarred (well worn but no new scratches).

I got to bend over and pick up a half penny a couple years ago!

I remember I was getting out of my car, and saw a small round coppery object on the pavement. I knew it wasn't a penny, so I was even more curious than normal. When I picked it up, it was a Dutch halfpenny, or perhaps a Dutch Indies halfpenny. I'm pretty sure that I had to have been how it got there in the first place, but I don't remember dropping it! I count it as lucky that the coin hadn't acquired any scratches or damage from having been in the parking lot.

Not sure if everyone does this, but since the kids and I have started collecting, I find that we all inspect every single coin that we get for change now. Before it used to just go straight from the register to my pocket to the jar to the coin machine at the bank without a thought.

Now that I think of all the keepers that must have gone right through my possession I get mad at the old me.

SJUHawks I know exactly what you are talking about and almost seem obsessed about it now and then. My wife knows to put her change aside and me look at it first before it goes into the big change container. She really can not complain too much since we have received a few wheat's, a few BU coins and last week a silver dime, to me it was worth looking for those.

I check every coin I get my hands on. I found a 1953 Wheat cent today in my coffee change, which kinda made my day! I am always happy to stoop for a cent or any other coin.

I found a steel penny in the wife's purse she had packed away, first time finding one of those. She also knows not to discard change until I'm done with it :)

Bmanofnbc, where do you find those? In the rich part of town's 7-11 parking lot? I can't imagine finding something like that anywhere around here.

I absolutely will bend over and pick up a coin, even a penny.

I have to search every coin before it is allowed to be spent or rolled and taken to the bank.

Actually I found the Gold chain & cross in an Elemtary school parking lot in a rather bad area.

The 2 silver chains came from a bank parking lot.

I sometimes bend over to pick up a penny. I just find that looking on the ground scouring for something, you get weird looks from other people so I have stopped!

I pick up anything, I've found $1 bills that were folded up, and other bills.

Once, in the early morning, I found a man's 14kt bracelet at a shopping mall.
about an ounce of 14KT.

Many other finds, and I always keep my eyes open.
