Just damage on the lobe. Not it show pushed metal on that area. If other devices are affected in the same area on LIBERTY, it is Machine Doubling that took a high bounce after the strike. (Sometimes it misses all of the other devices and affects just the highest devices) Either way (damaged or MD), not a doubled die. Spendable change. |

@Lack of Faith, not a doubled die. I suggest reading a lot of threads on the forum and getting a better sense of what various errors and varieties look like before trying to provide feedback for others on their coins. I don't mean that to be an insult, but we all start off not knowing what these things look like, and the best way to learn is by listening to experts rather than giving your own novice opinions.
@Jsertl The coin from Wexler's files that you linked is a 1984, so I don't really see what that would prove about your 2004 even if it looked similar, which it doesn't. The variety you linked has visible separation lines between the main and doubled earlobes, with significant added thickness to the back of the ear. Your coin is just the normal design for that year with a flared lip around the back of the earlobe that you're mistaking for doubling because of the way light reflects off of the different angled surface in that area of the coin.

I looked at it from every angle with only one light source. evidentally you can't tell it from the picture but you can visually see it (in person) going up & under the original ear lobe. Here is two coins of the same year & mint for a side by side comparison. it's not just a design feature for this year or shadow games.   |

If it were a DDO, there would be added size on the earlobe, which there is not. After seeing your side-by-side pictures, it looks like the coin you found may have taken a small ding to the surface while in circulation. Definitely not a doubled die though. |
