I inherited a set of three coins from 1881 and I'm not sure if they are uncirculated or proof. There's an Indian Head cent, a Three Cent nickle, and a Shield Nickle. They came to me together in a little purse. Here's a photo of the Shield Nickle. The fields appear to have all of their mint luster even though it may not look it in the photo. How do you take a photo of the high gloss fields? Would you want photos with a slightly different angle? Thanks.

Keith, it's always looked like this and I've had it for 30 years in a 2 x 2. Before that it was in a safety deposit box. Edit: My little Nikon compact camera has an orange case and I removed most of the reflected color from the photo.

Here's another look at the obverse from a slightly different angle.

Can we get a different angle of the reverse as well? I Initially thought polished from the first set of pics, but the second pic looks prooflike, definitely very well struck. I'm leaning slightly more toward proof.

I'm firmly in the proof camp. The cameo on the leaves as well as the razor sharp strike convinces me.

Here's the reverse at a different angle. The red hew is because my camera is bright orange and I'm so close that the coin is reflecting the color.

I can take some more photos. I only have an old pocket camera and a desk lamp. More glossy field?

Another reverse view. Anybody want a close up of devices? The "5" has a matt surface different from the fields, I'll to get it.

My camera work, I'm sure. Of course, it's more valuable as an UNC than a Proof. I'll show the other two coins ASAP. The Three Cent Nickel has a decidedly matt device.
