First two pictures look like a match to me. Estate auction find from a folder from last year. Looks much different than my other 1909 although it's a vdb. There's a few die combos I hope this is one. I'm just learning about these so any info or comments appreciated. Thanks

The rims do look extremely square......maybe? I'm gonna wait for others to chime in before I say definitively.

Thanks coinfrog and quarterhoarder72. Although some business strike 1909s are said to have square rims I looked at other matte proofs and all the diagnostics are there. I'm no expert but this looks legit

Thanks josephm99. I've done a fair amount of research on this so hopefully I'm on the right track.

Pics aren't good enough to show any die characteristics. Not seeing any of them either.

Business strike IMO.

Just to add, the arrows in your comp photos mean nothing. What you are pointing to, with the exception of 1 of the arrows are not die diagnostics.

Thanks grapecollects. That photo with the arrows was from a previous thread. I think they said it was a PCGS die #2. Clockwise I think those diagnostics are die scratch from m in unum to the field above the e. Die chip at 3 o'clock. Die scratch from tat in states and die scratch from u to n in United. What diagnostics and dies are you referring to maybe I have a closer pic

I'm questioning this coin. The rims look very proof like, but I just don't think the markers are there from what I see. Very iffy, leaning towards no.

1909-Matte-Proof-Lincoln?
I could be wrong like I said matte proof are new to me. From what I've read the rim should be sharp on both sides and textured like the fields from sandblasted dies leaving raised bumps

Thanks quarterhoarder72. I'm not saying it is a matte proof that's why the question mark is in the title. I'm looking for info with my fingers crossed. It's hard to find info without having the matte proof book plus there may be new discoveries

For the 1909 Matte proofs there is one confirmed obverse die (Albrecht 1) and 1 confirmed reverse die (Albrecht Reverse A). There are 3 other dies that may have been used (Albrecht Obv 2, Obverse 3, and Reverse B) but none of those dies have been confirmed as of yet. Also to note, the Obverse Die (Albrecht 1) is the same die used to produce the 1909 VDB cents.

To positively ID a 1909 matte proof there are a few markers that would be present.

Firstly, an obverse die scratch connecting the R and T of of LIBERTY.

A die scratch from the back of Lincolns coat going into the field.

And a series of die scratches in front of and below the nose.

On the reverse the easiest marker would be a die scratch connecting the right leg of the last A in AMERICA to the field, about half way to the wheat stalk.

Thanks grapecollects. I appreciate the info. Diagnostics along with the square looking rims is why I'm thinking it's a candidate. I'll post a few close ups
