Hi,
Those here who collect Iceland varieties can perhaps comment on this coin. I'm looking at the first 9 in 1940, where it appears there are two parts of the 9, with a final hook of the 9 at lower relief, merging nicely with the rest of the 9. It almost appears the 9 was reworked a little--versus damage to the numeral. Thoughts?

I just got finished checking about 7 of my 1940 5 Aurar 4 in circulated and three in unc and none of them have this 9 but I need to check one more in my safe later. Its a very interesting looking one ,being I collect Icelandic coins I never seen or heard of this variety. I'm working on a variety of my own a 1925 10 Aurar that I have in ms-64 by NGC that has a what appears to be the very beginning the carving of a R on the front of the coin to the left of the number 1 of the 10 Aurar, right next to the symbol on it lower right side. There is also a lighting bolt looking die crack between the N and D in Iceland I have seen three more with this die crack but no R and that I thing is because the coin was worn, this out line is very faint but unmistakable Oh and the R is backward. I wish I had a camera that will take a pic of this so I can show you, I'm thinking of getting a microscope with a camera that goes with it

How interesting...thanks for checking your coins! I look forward to see some pics of the variety you found--it sounds cool!
I know how photography is tricky, the above shot was from my Nikon, and here's an angled shot showing the difference in relief:

Thanks...I'm actually pushing the camera's resolution here, but I wanted more pixels to sharpen.
It was pretty tough to get the right light to capture a sense of relief.
I used a Nikon D70S with the Nikkor 60mm macro at f25 for 1/6 second (and tripod)
The first shot is f29 at 1/2 second. In both cases, it's all about that great Nikkor lens.

Thanks...I've done macros for years, but only started on coins recently.
So far I've learned a few things about shooting coins, and happy to help with a coin setup.

Thank you Kurt for the offer that I will take you up on in the near future. Right now I'm way to busy at work to tackle this for the next three weeks because of my remodeling job.
