In the markets and tourist traps in China, they sell "fantasy dollars" like this. Some have designs loosely based on Empire or Republic coin types; others are pure fantasy. They often come in "sets" eg. sets of the 12 Qing Emperors, or other famous figures of Chinese history.

For Westerners, anyone familiar with the 1978-1980 BBC's English-language translation of the Japanese TV serial "Monkey" will be roughly familiar with the story. This fantasy dollar is presumably part of a set depicting some of the characters from the novel.
