In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I thought I'd post a coin that got me started in my quest to research coins and take up variety collecting.
A while back, I picked up this 1802 large cent from an EAC member.
I remember how fun it was to research this coin in the Sheldon/Breen books and discover it's an earlier die state (minus RTY Cud: III) of the S-235.
From then on, I've been intrigued by the process of die making and resulting varieties.

So thanks to this coin and all the collectors here who make the hobby educational and fun! Have a great Thanksgiving!

I'm not really in to collecting die verieties and all that. I'd be happy to own ANY 1802 cent as nice as that one. That's a great example of a very early U.S. cent. A very solid investment. It's probably worth slabbing. VF30/VF30?

Thanks again everyone. ORC, I just compared mine to those on Heritage, and I think I did well (despite being my first coin purchase). I'm now leaning towards die state II because the R in LIBERTY is missing the clash damage.

Thanks...and it looks much better in person. My camera/lighting makes it look flat and pockmarked.
