There's a convincing fake of these that's been talked about on this forum, and while my coin doesn't make the marks attributed to that particular fake... I'm still going to run it by folks here, since you seem to know things.

I can't see anything obviously wrong with that one. As you say, it has none of the known markers for the fakes and the toning and wear look convincing. If it is a fake it is extremely well done and very worrying!
I take it weight, dimensions and silver content check out OK?
How did you acquire it? Often the route it came gives as many clues to the dodgy ones as the coin itself.
I would be happy to take that one as genuine if all else checks out OK.

How did you get it?

If its real, its very nice - probably a milled coin made by Eloi Mestrel - very collectable and Eloi himself came to a sticky end!

Thanks everyone - it was a Canadian ebay find. We don't have a plethora of sources for English coins aside from ebay here unfortunately (and probably not surprisingly, since this is Canada). I was comfortable with the seller, and I didn't question it until I poked around this forum and saw a fake of this type that *I* wouldn't have caught as a fake without knowing about the die flaws on it.

That looks good to me here's an article which illustrates what the 1562 fakes would have in common at the 3 o' clock position(the deformed right arm leaf) and the 8 o' clock position. Yours does not have those fake attributes.http://www.predecimal.com/forum/top...62-sixpence/
