I think it is a re-punched date. My example is BU and I can clearly see polish lines through the old date. On my coin there is also a die clash under Abe's chin. There may be some slight die deterioration-doubling along the top of Abe's head, but the date looks like it was re-punched. Just my opinion.

gunbarrelcoins, first, to the CCF!

Second, from the colouration/shininess of your coin, it appears to be replated, but let's discuss it in your own thread. Perhaps a moderator would be nice enough to move it for you.

It has been replated but the doubling you're seeing is Die Deterioration Doubling.

Extreme die wear. Consider the planchets. There were steel instead of copper. They caused extreme wear on the dies that the copper planchets didn't. So they wear a lot faster:

Thanks for the reply and images Coop! It really helps explain things. After digging around I found your videos earlier this evening.

I like coins that aren't perfect, they have better stories. Between the plating, deterioration, clashes and crack this one has a lot to talk about.

I'm more of a cent variety collector. Die event coins, and damaged ones to me go back into circulation. My Motto: "Save the best, spend the rest.")
