I purchased 35 40% half dollars off of ebay for just under $108, and I was wanting to try to trade them for some 90% at my local friendly coin shoppe. Would all ya guys rather have 35 1965-1969 half dollars or $7 or even $6.5 of 90% constitutional silver? I am a little bit on the edge of weather or not I should do the trade for that (Assuming I can get close to that). I would much appreciate your opinions.

o.k so you paid 108$, for approximately 122$ in melt value.., now it depends, on what a dealer pays, usually much less for 40%, than for 90%..
If it was me, I would look at this as 2 different deals,,
How much can I sell my, 40% for, and how much will I have to pay for my 90%, if a dealer will give you break on either side of the buy price, then maybe you can exchange the 2, but regardless, you will never make much money buying 40% silver near spot..
As no one pays premiums on it..

If you plan to have a lot of silver, better to have 90% as it takes up less bulk. Otherwise, you are sure to end up with less silver after the trade. No LCS will trade ASW in 40% for the same ASW in 90%.

Local dealers underpay for 40%.
You might be better off holding the 40%.
Right now wholesale price on 40% is 87% of spot.

35 40% halves melt around $123 right now. $6.50 in 90% junk melts around $112.
I'd definitely take the 90%.

I like the 40% Kennedy's....buy a few every time I'm at the coin store.
BUT....I'd take the trade in your case, for many of the stacking reasons listed above.

40%'ers can be a hard move. My dealer pays less than half of melt value.

Check with the dealer first.

Quote:where do you get the wholesale price from? APMEX? "Wholesale price" in this case is the highest advertised buy price. Keep in mind though that it might require substantial quantities to get this price. Also remember that in almost all cases this is the delivered price and you have to pay shipping. There are likely even higher prices possible especially with large quantities delivered to smelters but the highest I know is Arizona Coin and Jewel which pays .2791 times spot per "2" kennedy halfs. You can get substantially more for BU rolls of these but most buyers want really nice coins.

Some local dealers offer only 50 or 50% of spot and then want to make a profit selling the 90% to you. It's difficult to make mutually beneficial trades with local shops though it can be done.

I'd try to sell them online. I've had good luck selling them at 15% over melt. If you try a dealer they will underpay for these, sometimes pass on them period.

I've had very good luck/ease selling items on Craigslist. I listed several rolls of 40% halves a while back, at spot. The halves sat for weeks and one person inquired, the halves finally sold below 80% melt.
