All,

I am in the process of closely examining some of my 20+ 1959/60/60-D pennies that I estimate to be MS 66-67. I wanted to show you all an example of one 1960 PCGS-graded MS-66 sold on ebay that appears to me to be at least 2 grades lower (on the obv, I see several long hairlines above LIBERTY, a scratch behind Lincoln's head, more smaller scratches above the date, and a "blotch" to the left of Lincoln's beard on the lower cheek. On the rev, I see a small scratch at the middle base of the memorial and a few short hairlines in the field below. Also, almost all of mine are red with nice luster. Could you please take a look and let me know what you think. I have at least a dozen other 59/60/60-D's that I have graded MS 64-65 that, IMH and inexperienced opinion, are better than the ebay one. I am trying to decide which of mine I should send in to GC or a TPG and issues like this confuse me. I have listed the ebay coin link below. I hope this post/link is OK to submit.

Thanks!

Bill

Hmm, I can't believe I'm stumped on this attribution . First glance yelled out Proof ! but it 's not exhibiting squared rims for a proof , plus the fact that PCGS is calling it an MS-66 . Agree there are a lot of small issues with this coin ; If it is ( was ) truly a mint state coin without the issues then I would call it an MS-69 .
Or maybe PCGS blew it on the call .

I would personally check out a few other examples to compare. This one is weakly struck. The scratches on this one appear to be die polishing lines (notice how they do not pass over the devices and look to be raised as well).

The tick marks that are on the shoulder, beard, and hair, and cheek (all of your high points) are planchet marks, that were not removed during the strike of the coin. Very common to see this on weakly struck coin (you see it a lot on nickel coins due to the hardness. Eg. stairs on Jefferson's, shoulder of the buffalo on Buffalo nickels). This is also what is seen on the reverse (steps and fields below the steps).

Fields are clean. I see a hit west of Lincoln's head and a hit across the steps. I would personally say 65 on this one. Technically speaking, 66 isn't unreasonable, but it's very much lacking in the eye appeal department in my book.

Just my 2 cents.

Edit: I would pick a couple of what you feel are the highest quality and post them!

Many of the marks you see on the ebay example are either from the die itself or were simply not removed by the strike (like under the memorial).

You can post pics of anything you are considering submitting for grading (in separate topics) and we'll give our opinions.

OK. Thanks for the commentary and advice--always learning. I will post a few of mine later today--perhaps two each of ones I have graded 64/65/66/67. I suspect that grading MS coins from photos is challenging, but your comments give me some reassurance that you can help me decide about submitting to GC/TPGs. :)

Best,

Bill

You cannot simply look at a couple of pictures and say confidently your coin will grade higher. Grading is mostly about EYE APPEAL and luster. A lot can be forgiven as far as hits, spots and ticks if the coin presents well in hand.

All,

Your comments are interesting to me because I have more than 100 59/60/60-D red lustrous pennies that I have been downgrading because of a few to "several hits, spots and ticks." That comment combined with my thorough lack of knowledge/understanding of the differences between less than high quality minting and PMD have me going back over the high red luster pennies. As I mentioned in my another post earlier today, I'm having issues transferring my photos from my iphone to the PC. When I solve that, I will post photos of several of them for your kind advice/commentary. Thanks so much!

Bill
